The City of Cranbrook is located in the southeast corner of British Columbia amongst the majestic Rockies and Purcell mountains, in close proximity to Alberta and the Canada/USA border. With a population of approximately 20,000, Cranbrook is the largest community in the East Kootenay with a trading base of approximately 70,000. Cranbrook provides an inviting lifestyle in a beautiful setting that has made our City a welcoming and growing place in which to live, work and play.
Reporting to the Director of Recreation and Culture, the General Manager – Venues and Events, will focus on building new business opportunities for the City’s recreation facilities, secures special events, provides quality recreation opportunities for local residents and develops partnerships with regional organizations to market Cranbrook as the events center of the Kootenays,
The General Manager will liaise with customers and contracted service providers to ensure quality of service meets or exceeds client expectations including but not limited to: customer service, custodial, utility, grounds and security. This role is also responsible for the day-to-day management and administration functions, daily budget administration, annual and long-range budget planning of all indoor recreation facilities; directly manages the Operations/Events Manager and works cooperatively with the Aquatic /Programing Manager; oversee the lease contracts and the contract services necessary for operations of indoor recreation facilities.
As a leader in this corporation, you will have an opportunity to drive and influence continuous improvement and development of staff, oversee employee and labour relations, as well as partner with Occupational Health and Safety to deliver programs and services that meet operational and staff requirements. Our ideal candidate must be a people-person driven to provide excellent customer service, prefer using a highly collaborative and consultative work style, and have excellent change-management skills to bring organizational and regulatory changes through to full implementation. They must be comfortable breaking new ground, adaptive in responding to user-demands and event needs, and lead the way to bring about innovative changes!

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Diploma or Degree in any one or more of the following related fields: Recreation Management, Event Management, or Business Management.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence
  • Minimum (5) years’ experience in Venues and Events management or related experience
  • Minimum (5) years’ experience in multipurpose facility management and supervisory or leadership experience in operations management.
  • Knowledge and understanding of working within collective bargaining agreements.
  • Good working knowledge of WorkSafe BC Regulations
  • Required to work outside of traditional business hours to ensure fulfilment of client requirements, shows, and events.
  • Respond to Emergency Call-outs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Marketing and Events Management Diploma or Degree
  • Recreation Management Degree
  • Class 5 Power Engineering Certificate (Refrigeration)
  • Icemaker’s Course
  • Good understanding of Pool operation and maintenance
  • Training in Technical report writing
