This is supervisory technical work in planning, assigning, supervising and checking the work of subordinate foremen and crews engaged in arboricultural and urban forestry work on City lands. In addition, an incumbent may assist with the preparation of operating and capital budget estimates and monitors same, and may participate in the development and implementation of programs as it relates to the work. The Foreperson – Parks Forestry prepares, checks and maintains records and technical reports; develops and prepares programs, procedures and makes policy recommendations; orders equipment and materials; prepares program and materials cost estimates. Establishes work norms and devises safe work methods; ensures the safety of work crews and the public by advising and enforcing observance of accident prevention methods and precautions. Designs layouts for tree plantings and selects tree species; liaise with City staff on new projects involving tree planting. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include Completion of the 12th school grade supplemented by related technical courses related to the work, plus considerable related experience in a supervisory capacity, OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the arboricultural and urban forestry work. Considerable knowledge of tree species, diseases, pests, identification of hazardous and diseased trees, mitigation and treatment practices involved; of the hazards and safety precautions related to the work. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, other employees and the public; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to perform all duties with minimal supervision. Skill in the use and care of a variety of tools and equipment used in the work. International Society of Arboriculture, Arborist certification, International Society of Arboriculture, Tree Risk Assessment Qualification certification, International Society of Arboriculture, Municipal Specialist certification and Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia are required.
